Olivier et Jean-Christophe Santini

«On fait ce métier pour transmettre. Quand on plante une parcelle c’est pour quarante ans. »

«Notre famille a acheté le domaine en 1943 et, très vite, notre grand-oncle Pierre Cathinaud a débuté la remise en état du vignoble. C’était un érudit, passionné de cuisine et de vin. En 1951, il a produit les premiers vins sur le domaine. C’est en 1962 qu’il est rejoint par notre père Jean-Pierre Santini qui s’est investi pleinement dans le domaine. Il nous a transmis sa passion et l’exigence du travail soigné», racontent Olivier et Jean-Christophe. Depuis, les Santini n’ont plus jamais quitté Cassis. Le nom de Paternel n’a rien d’un hasard, la fibre familiale est ici évidente, jusque sur les étiquettes. Les origines corses de la famille y sont peut-être pour quelque chose, l’attachement au domaine et à Cassis a fait le reste. Après le grand-oncle et le père, c’est aujourd’hui Jean-Christophe et Olivier qui dirigent le domaine depuis le début des années 2000. Ils préparent le terrain pour la prochaine génération avec Victor, le fils de Jean-Christophe et l’aîné des petits-enfants: «On fait ce métier pour transmettre. Quand on plante une parcelle, c’est pour quarante ans», rappelle Olivier. Ce n’est donc pas un hasard si la cuvée haut de gamme du Paternel porte le nom «Esprit de Famille».

“Our family acquired the domaine in 1943 and our great-uncle, Pierre Cathinaud, rapidly began restructuring the vineyard. He was a scholar and passionate about food and wine and produced the estate’s first wines in 1951. Our father, Jean-Pierre Santini, joined him full- time in 1962 and it was he who passed on to us his passion and work ethic”, say Olivier and Jean-Christophe. The Santini family have been in Cassis ever since then and the estate name of Paternel is no coincidence, with family values very visible right through to the labels. The Corsican roots of the family may have contributed a part of this sense of family, but attachment to the estate and Cassis has certainly contributed the rest. After the great-uncle and the father, it is now Jean-Christophe and Olivier who have managed the estate since the beginning of this century. They are paving the way for the next generations, with Victor, Jean-Christophe’s son, and the eldest of the grandchildren. “We do this job so that we can pass it on. When we plant a plot, we’re looking forty years ahead”, explains Olivier. So, it is natural that the top wine in the Paternel range goes by the name of “Esprit de Famille” (Family Spirit).
