Nicolas Bontoux-Bodin

Après Émile Bodin, figure tutélaire de Cassis au début du xx e siècle, il y a eu Madeleine, sa fille, puis Jean-Jacques, son petit-fils, et enfin, Nicolas Bontoux-Bodin, aujourd’hui aux com- mandes du domaine Bodin. Et il est plutôt fier du patrimoine familial. «Le domaine Bodin a joué un rôle important dans l’histoire de Cassis: après le phylloxéra, au tournant du xx e siècle, Émile Bodin et Albert Savon ont été à la base de la replantation du vignoble sur porte-greffes américains, avec en ligne de mire la production de blancs secs, plutôt que les muscats doux.» Un bon choix, s’il faut en juger par les cuvées actuelles, qui tirent tout le profit possible de la large palette de cépages et de terroirs de Cassis, mais aussi de la maîtrise des températures, qui a permis d’affiner la pureté aromatique des vins. Nicolas a parfaitement digéré l’héritage familial et, s’il entend préserver l’acquis des générations passées, c’est aussi un innovateur, aussi bien en termes d’assemblage et de vinification que d’habillage de ses vins. «Évoluer sans trahir» pourrait être sa devise.

« Je recherche des vins élégants, d’une certaine complexité et avec un bon potentiel d’évolution. Je pense que nos bons blancs peuvent bien vieillir. »

After Émile Bodin, the symbolic figurehead of Cassis at the beginning of the 20th century, came his daughter Madeleine, followed by his grandson Jean-Jacques, and – most recently – Nicolas Bontoux-Bodin, who runs Domaine Bodin today. And he’s rather proud of the family heritage. “The Bodin estate has played an important role in the history of Cassis: after the phylloxera epidemic at the turn of the 20th century, Émile Bodin and Albert Savon were the driving forces behind the replanting of the vineyard on American root stocks, with the ultimate aim of producing dry white wines, rather than sweet muscats”. It was indeed an inspired choice when you look at it from the point of view of today’s wines, which take maximum advantage of the broad range of Cassis varietals and terroirs, and of the controlled temperatures here. These factors have made it possible to perfect the aromatic purity of the wines. Nicolas fully embraces his family heritage and intends to preserve the know-how amassed by previous generations, but he is also an innovator in terms not only of blending and vinification, but also the presentation of his wines. “Evolution without betrayal” could easily be his motto.
