Le domaine du Bagnol se situe à la lisière de la ville et tire son nom du quartier où il se trouve. C’est certainement l’un des plus anciens sites viticoles en pays cassidain, car les archives communales font mention de vignes dans ce secteur dès 1430. En 1867, apparaît la première trace formelle d’une propriété appartenant à l’époque au marquis de Fesques et dénom- mée le Bagnol. L’histoire moderne du domaine commence en 1997 par son rachat par Jean-Louis Genovesi. Natif de Cassis, il a fait carrière à Paris dans l’informatique avant un inéluctable retour aux sources. Il confie d’abord le vignoble à un jeune vigneron de Cassis avant de se prendre au jeu – «Quand on vit sur un domaine, on ne peut échapper à la cave et au vin» – au point de deve- nir l’une des figures de l’appellation et, un temps, le président du syndicat de l’AOC. Dès 2003, il confie les clés du domaine à son fils Sébastien, qui a rejoint le domaine après des études spé- cialisées. Sébastien Genovesi ne tarde pas à apporter son enthousiasme et ses convictions: une viticulture saine, des vinifications ambitieuses, partiellement sous bois, et un travail en profon- deur sur les vins qui offrent ce compromis savoureux et très cassidain entre fraîcheur et ampleur.

SÉBASTIEN GENOVESI

Domaine du Bagnol is on the edge of the town of Cassis, and takes its name from the community of Le Bagnol. It is certainly one of the oldest winegrowing locations in the Cassis region, since the presence of vines here is mentioned in the local archives as early as 1430. The first formal record dates from 1867 and refers to a property called Le Bagnol, then owned by the Marquis de Fesques. Recent history of this estate began in 1997 when it was bought by Jean-Louis Genovesi. Born in Cassis, his career in IT took him to Paris before he succumbed to the inevitable pull and returned to his roots. Before taking over the reins himself, he entrusted the vineyard to a young wine-grower from Cassis. “When you live on an estate, there’s no escaping the winery and the wine”, in his case this close involvement led him to become a leading figure in the appella- tion, and eventually Chairman of the AOC Federation. Jean-Louis handed over the estate keys to his son Sébastien in 2003 on his graduation. Sébastien Genovesi lost no time in putting both his enthusiasm and convictions to work: sound viticulture, ambitious vinification involving partial use of wooden barrels, and a great deal of highly detailed work on wines that offer the delicious and very typically Cassis compromise between freshness and body.
