Numerous Settlers Established as a stronghold in 1281 by Philip the Fair, in order to compete with the English bastide towns, Dome has preserved remains of its settlers down through the centuries. To follow the timeline, start by a visit to the Prehistoric painted caves La Martine A  , and Mammouth, then continue with the ancestral ruins of the “Chateau duRoy” whose first foundations can be traced back to the Viking invasions. The bastide town is still largely enclosed by its walls and fortified gates (below) topped by the Esplanade de la Barre B  , overlooking the Dordogne valley. High up on the fortified walls, the Espla- nade Hotel-Restaurant F  , is an institu- tion. The shaded terrace looks out over the horizon. The chef Pascal Bouland, serves distinctive traditional cuisine. In Vitrac, optionally, the Chalet Restau- rant, opposite the Falaise de la Banquette, serves unpretentious dishes, popular with families, in an idyllic setting on the banks of the Dordogne.
