The troglodytic fort was carved from the cliff that overlooks the village, in the Middle Ages. Both the English, during the Hundred Years War, and the Protestants during the French Wars of Religion failed to overtake it.

Between the Cliff and the River The beautiful yellow-ochre flagstone-roofed homes appear to have been carved from the cliff. The narrow streets take on the appearance of an earthly paradise as theymake their way up under the south-facing cliff, towards the little Notre-Dame-de-la-Roque Church and the Tarde Manor, to the promontories where we can look out on the astonishing Neoclassical Malartrie castle (built in 1901) and the twin buildings of the Maladrerie. A delightful admission-free tropical garden A winds through the village featuring along the way: Oleander, Palm trees, Bougainvillea, Pomegranate, Cacti, Citrus trees and even Banana trees!
