An important fortress in the Middle Ages, Montignac Castle C , was largely destroyed in 1825.The fortified tower, one of the rare vestiges of the building, will transport you to the Hundred Years War when the town, stronghold of the Counts of Périgord, was a French enclave amidst the English fiefs.

At the Crossroads of Time Long before the discovery of the Lascaux caves, Montignac played a major part in the history of the Périgord region. The wealth of its architecture on both sides of the River Vézère attests to this fact. With its XIIIth century timbered houses, the medieval rue Pegerie A  , should not be missed. The balconied houses across the river B , are listed buildings. Explore Saint-Jean’s Hospital D (below) , its arcades and chapel (XIVth), the Poor Claire’s Convent E  , and the XVIIth century townhouses F  . Then head for the XIVth century church to admire the belfry G  , and the Duchêne house H  , in XIXth century neoclassical style. Take the time for a stroll along the quays to listen to the river go by…
